Chapter Three
Oliver woke, his ankle screaming, and he forced himself out of bed. He needed to start food, to… He wanted to sleep for hours, for days. Who knew lying on the ground under a rock would take it out of him so badly.
It was ridiculous. At least it hadn’t rained and drowned him.
No drowning. No rain. Azul and Turquoise crowded up on his side, nudging him.
“Of course not, dearest ones.” He couldn’t leave them, just as they couldn’t leave him.
Oliver. Oliver and Arturo. Their eyes glowed gold at him, their feathers ruffling.
“We’ll have to see, lovelies. Free will and all that.” Just because he felt a connection didn’t mean Arturo would. Sure, they’d had sex hot enough to sear the cactus outside, but what if that was just sex?
And Arturo was a soldier, someone who would be missed if he disappeared into the sand.
“I can hear you thinking,” Arturo said.
“Can you?” Really?
“You keep thinking my real name. You really like it? I always thought it was nerdy.” Chino rolled up on one elbow to smile at him.
“It suits you. Sounds right in my head.”
“Huh.” Chino leaned down and kissed him, a sensual glide of tongues and lips. How long had it been since he’d had a someone to touch, to talk to? A long time, and never with someone who could hear the dragons. He’d been in the desert for ages, defending the little ones.
“Who’s the blond guy? The last guy you had sex with.”
Oh. Arturo was looking into his thoughts.
“He was a hippy. He didn’t see the dragons, but he liked to fuck.”
“I like that, too. How can you not see the dragons?” Arturo lifted Emmy, who wiggled and flapped.
“I don’t think most people can. They just don’t look.”
“Weird.” Arturo kissed him again, then sat up, carrying two little green dragons with him.
“You have hangers-on.”
“I do.” Laughing, Arturo flapped his arms gently, making the girls squeal and cling. “Okay, ladies, I need to hit the head. Stay with Oliver for two minutes.”
Oliver. Oliver. Ol.Iv.Er.
“Yes, beauties.” Oliver loved how they were the perfect little mimics. He held them in the cradle of one arm, tickling and playing.
When Arturo came back, Oliver let the dragons attack before grabbing his crutches to go do his business, too.
He washed up, brushed his teeth, took a pain pill. That would kick in soon, and he would be able to start to do all the chores one had to do when they cared for dragons.
The sun was starting to fade and it would start cooling down soon. That was when he came alive, watering plants, making food for the dragons, making sure the dragons hunted for lizards.
They needed exercise, the babies did, and they needed to practice talking, hunting, controlling their magic. While he might be lonely sometimes, Oliver knew he was never bored.
He headed out of the bathroom, exhausted before he made it across the bedroom.
Arturo grabbed him and turned him right toward the bed. “No. You rest. Tell me what to do.”
Arturo’s touch made him want to sing, the rush of electricity zipping through him.
